XS NOIZE AND PAINTED HALO PRESENT: UNSIGNED #2.3 – THE LUTRAS 2

XS Noize and Painted Halo Records are passionate advocates for new music and are delighted to provide a platform for emerging artists in the form of XS Unsigned, a feature showcasing brand new talent cherry-picked from submissions by XS Noize Editor Mark Millar and Painted Halo’s boss Ivan Marziano. Great news for all you audiophiles out there, but more importantly for those whose voices deserve to be lifted from the crowd. This time it’s the turn of the Lutras.

Meet the Artist:

Fresh doesn’t come any fresher than the Lutras, with their debut single Run & Hide coming out only a couple of months ago. However, this four-piece band from Dumfries, Scotland, are certainly no novices, given the over 250 gigs to their name – including prestigious venues such as Glasgow’s King Tuts and O2 ABC, and events the likes of Camden Rocks Festival in London and Belladrum Festival in Inverness.

After two years of solid gigging, band members Ben Clements (vocals), Thomas Gillan (guitar), Danny Heron (bass) and Finlay Maxwell (drums) finally decided to channel their energy and experience into their first-ever studio recording, and the anthemic Run & Hide shows just why they can command a hero’s welcome in their native Dumfries, where they filled 350-capacity The Venue in late December with a sweaty, adoring crowd.

XS NOIZE AND PAINTED HALO PRESENT: UNSIGNED #2.3 – THE LUTRAS

The track can be perhaps described as a sunny slice of Britpop as filtered through Bruce Springsteen, but without losing any of the modern edge that one would perhaps associate with the likes of Catfish and the Bottlemen. It’s easy enough to see why the song has attracted more than 30K streams on Spotify despite the lack of a promotional video, or the full might of a big record label behind it.

These fellas have clearly been pouring sweat to hone their craft, and – according to guitarist Thomas – 2019 promises to be no less hectic than 2018: “2019 is going to be a busy year from start to finish, we’re releasing something early in the year then looking to get back on the road, we are planning on just playing as much as possible this year as well as getting some festival slots which seems very possible. We just want to release music and play in as many towns/cities as possible to as many people as we can.” It sounds like they’re coming to get all of us, and we at XS Unsigned can’t wait for it!

After spending decades amassing a record collection spanning most things from Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas to the most extensive Tropicalia collection in Europe, Ivan Marziano finally bit the bullet and founded Painted Halo Records in 2018. He is currently working on the label’s first release, Wasteful by London-based band River Fury. Favourite album: Rock Bottom by Robert Wyatt Favourite artist: David Sylvian Album of 2018 so far: toss-up between Twin Fantasy by Car Seat Headrest and 7 by Beach House
