Why Bingo is an all-time favourite

Bingo

Whether you’re an avid casino gamer or not, there’s no doubt you’ve heard of Bingo. The game, commonly consisting of 25 squares with five columns and five rows, has been an all-time favourite for centuries.

In the modern-day, the game of chance is available to play at any time you like, both at land-based venues and online, with the Paddy Power Bingo campaign being just one of the unique ways you can experience the popular pastime.

Join us as we delve into what exactly makes Bingo so great, so you can decide whether it’s earned its place as such an iconic game…

A brief history

It’s believed that the game we know and love today first originated in Italy in the 1500s, where it was known as ’Il Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia‘.  In the late 1700s, the game, which featured 27 squares laid out in three rows and nine columns, moved to France. Here, it was known as ‘Le Lotto’.

In the 1920s Bingo travelled to North America, where its name evolved to Beano, as beans were used to cover the numbers on cards. And later, the name changed to Bingo.

Bingo comes to Britain

When Bingo came to Britain in the early 1800s, it developed a richer history.

Many believed the game had a ‘hold’ on women, and gambling was widely frowned upon. However, from 1710 during the rein of Queen Anne, the Government promoted a State Lottery to help boost their income, which meant large prizes could be won by poorer people during these times. But it remained illegal for women to meet and gamble in large groups outside of this.

Evolving to the modern-day

Eventually, in 1968, the Gaming Act was implemented, helping to keep games of chance like Lotteries and Bingo fair and regulated.

Bingo, also known as ‘Housey Housey’ in England, remained widely popular, and commercial Bingo soon developed from what seemed like nowhere.

Online Bingo

From bustling Bingo halls and games at the seaside, 1996 saw the opening of online casinos, which paved the way for gaming, right at your fingertips.

The new millennium saw huge advances in technology, with online casinos hosting games of Bingo in real-time, and new, themed games creating more ways to reinvent the already classic 75 and 90-ball Bingo.

Now, you can play the likes of Deal or No Deal or Age of the Gods-themed Bingo, from anywhere you have internet access, on any compatible device.

Gameplay is available in real-time, with a Random Number Generator (RNG) creating new, unpredictable outcomes every single second.

Whether you decide to play in a land-based Bingo hall with a real-life caller, or online with a RNG keeping the games fair – you never know what might happen when you embark on your next Bingo adventure!

What do you think? Has the game earned its spot as an all-time favourite? Or will you play a range of other classic casino games other than Housey Housey?
