VIDEO PREMIERE: Oliver Marson - 'Cocaine Romance' - Watch Now

‘Cocaine Romance’ is the first solo release by Oliver Marson, which will also be the lead single from the forthcoming ‘Cocaine Romance’ E.P.

Oliver explains the reasoning behind the track: ‘Cocaine Romance’ was written when I was kind of in a broken downstate. My band at the time, Bahama Bleach had just gone their separate ways and I wanted to do something that was brash and a little bit distasteful. The song itself was written about a friend of mine who began dating a drug dealer. I was worried more than anything, but I guess I secretly just really liked her. I would sit at the desk of my mundane office job, listening to new wave bands from the 80s and imagine all the things she might have been getting up to in these dark and seedy worlds that don’t even exist.

The song takes inspiration from singers like Scott Walker, Nick Cave and John Cale and combines it with a retro synth pop sound similar to bands from the 80s such as Human League, Depeche Mode and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and also more modern bands like Drab Majesty, John Maus and Ariel Pink.

The music video was created in collaboration with director Jonathan Demelkon whom Marson met on set for a video game trailer that he was making the music for. More recently, Marson created music for the Mary Quant Exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum. The visuals of the video take inspiration from the decadent and seedy world created by Peter Greenaway in The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover creating a world where nothing is as it seems.
