VIDEO PREMIERE: Candythief - 'Today' - Watch Now

Eclectic Edinburgh-based musical adventurer Candythief returns with her third full-length album of chamber/orchestral pop-with-grit, accompanied by a brand new animated visual clip for ‘Today’.

About the video: “Years ago I played a show where someone performed a routine on silks, and I thought it looked like amazing fun – but the kind of thing I’d never be able to do – a bit like the character in the video, (nicknamed Toad), I gazed at this incredible skill but it seemed way out of reach. All of us have to dredge up and can dredge up heroic qualities in smaller and larger ways, and our old ideas about who we are and what we are get to experience must be allowed to fall away for us find those qualities, and this process can be disorientating. We can wonder whether we’ve relinquished everything in the moment when we let go of one thing to reach for another.”

Festooned with propulsive riffs, jubilant melodies, and spacious reveries. Ambient, psychedelic builds give way to black-eyed carnival noir blues and urgent but precise arrangements tinged with a chanson touch of Jacques Brel and Neil Hannon : a crisp, beguiling and distinctive modern take on European songwriting.

Candythief, aka Diana de Cabarrus , first emerged in association with Fife’s Fence records (King Creosote, James Yorkston, The Pictish Trail) , in 2006, and spent formative time in the London Anti-folk scene . She was never part of one tribe, but her style has attracted comparisons to prog ; French synth pop , folk pop , and the more stylistically wide-ranging 60s folk innovators , before she knew either what prog was, or that people are marmite about it. This is because she partly grew up bumping along pot-holed tracks in Europe’s only geographically-accurate desert, listening to a random and specific sub-set of psychedelia , Mozart and Americana , and some odd things in between: there was no music press there. Cling film was frankly enough of an innovation in those parts. However, having since checked out both King Crimson and Neil Hannon , she’s fine with it.
