VIDEO PREMIERE: 40 Shillings on the Drum - 'Mean Streets (Born in the Same Gutter)' - Watch Now
After a successful 2018 including a well-received live album, short UK tour (their first), and high-profile shows including an appearance at Beautiful Days festival alongside the likes of Manic Street Preachers and The Hives, and a support slot with UK Subs, 40 Shillings on the Drum are storming into 2019 with the video to their brand new single, Mean Streets (Born in the Same Gutter).

With the band already renowned for thinking outside of the box when it comes to the accompanying videos to their music, fans new and old will not be disappointed in the latest concept. Having had custom puppets hand crafted of each band member, the Shillings took the puppets on a night out in their hometown of Brighton and captured the results for the video. Featuring iconic places such as the Royal Pavilion, the legendary Prince Albert pub and the replica piece of Banksy’s ‘Kissing Policemen’, the puppets antics are cut with footage of the band performing live in the Brighton Police Cells Museum.

The fun idea is executed with a dark edge making it the perfect accompaniment to the track itself. With hints of a slightly political subject matter, the song feeds off of a disillusioned youth caught in a destructive cycle and being doomed to follow in their elders footsteps.

The tone of Mean Streets demonstrates a huge departure from The Shillings’ traditional folk-punk roots, by taking a more contemporary, punk-rock sound to new heights and is a real eye-opener to the diversity of the band. Recorded at Brighton Electric (Royal Blood, The Cure) and mixed by Tom Gleeson of Slaves to Gravity and Feeder, the high-end production work is a grand example of what to expect when the band hit the studio to record their debut album with Tommy on producer duties in June 2019.
