Following the release of his critically acclaimed debut EP Making Love last year, Travis Bretzer shares new track ‘Promises,’ which is released 15th December and is thrilled to announce debut album Waxing Romantic, which is set for release on 23rd February 2015 via Mexican Summer.

2013 saw Travis Bretzer quickly and rightly acquire critical acclaim. Amidst blog buzz he signed to the well-revered Brooklyn label Mexican Summer (Best Coast, Peaking Lights, Kurt Vile) and released his debut Making Love EP, which garnered him a well-deserved 8 out of 10 in NME, as well as praise from DIY, The FADER, The Line of Best Fit and Sunday Times Culture (Hottest Downloads). Following the EP, he released double A-Side ‘Low Volt / Debbie’ to support his first tour of the UK and Europe, which led to more praise from Guardian (New Band of the Day), The 405 and Q Magazine (Five Songs To Hear This Week). Travis was also championed by the likes of Lauren Laverne at BBC 6 Music and XFM’s John Kennedy who invited him to record an X-Posure session during his visit to the UK. He has since spent the past year recording his long-awaited debut long player with Haunted Graffiti’s Jorge Elbrecht.
‘Promises’ is the first single from Waxing Romantic. Inspired from a tender late night conversation between lovers, ‘Promises’ is built around a comforting guitar riff that keeps it casual and reassuring.
Recorded at Gary’s Electric in Brooklyn under producer Jorge Elbrecht (Haunted Graffiti, Lansing-Dreiden), Waxing Romantic has a warm pop sensibility that feels like a natural progression from his hazy Making Love EP. It features a solid crew of players, including members of Haunted Graffiti, James Richardson of MGMT and Regal Degal’s Josh da Costa. The record was partly inspired from memories of rifling through Travis’ parents’ soft-rock LPs: think Gerry Rafferty, Al Stewart, Christopher Cross, The Eagles. In keeping with the album’s ‘70s pop mode, the lyrics are kept simple and sweet, but never cloying.
Hailing from Edmonton, Alberta, 24-year-old Canadian Bretzer has an appropriately singular, off-beat take on guitar pop. An adroit songwriter and true troubadour, Travis sidesteps easy pigeonholing.
