TRACK PREMIERE: Ollie Trevers - 'I Can't Make it Up' - Listen Now

Opening with a melancholic guitar strummed to an empty room, the sound-stage is impressive, you can really feel that this is intended for a film score. It’s raw and subtly catchy, you find yourself being given a cinematic experience within the first few seconds. It’s as if you find yourself placed in the directors chair envisioning the very scenes it could go with, it evokes imagery of a night of heartbreak, the long cold walk through the rain, the wait for the bus on that freezing wet night, thoughts racing through your mind and the pain of a potential rejection. The vocals open you to the idea that Ollie is trying to escape from the darkness of the mind and his inner demons that torment him no matter the cost to himself.

With the lyrics “I walked through the long grass in nothing but my skin” I couldn’t help but shake the impression that he has laid bare his feelings and emotions to someone he felt close to, someone important, but the long grass was little, if any protection from the jackals that lay in wait, he was torn apart emotionally, you can feel the pain and sheer suffering in his emotionally adrift lyrics, he is straying from shore.

The track then takes on a blissful tilt as Ollie Describes his “Fall from Grace” with a stark contrast in musical tone, the guitars are lighter and gentler, the drums calmer and much more sedate, it’s the calm before the storm, you can feel his mental state collapsing, the clouds are forming on the horizon, as he rightly says “I am in a place I don’t belong” We then enter the meltdown, the chorus is a familiar breaking point for many, it’s the attempt to block out the pain through any means, it provokes imagery of a chaotic binge, a session of drinking heavily, of drug abuse, of anything to numb the feeling of isolation, the sickening agony it’s heavy, it’s chaotic, but it’s strangely beautiful.

The imagery provided shortly afterwards is one many of us will be familiar with, the morning after – you almost get a sense of stale cigarette smoke hanging around, the hangover, the migraine and the rejection of light by the eye, only for it to begin again, it’s a repetitive cycle that many find it hard to escape.

It’s a heavily emotional, deeply chaotic look at love, loss and the demons that torment many of us, it’s fitting that the EP is entitled Cordelia giving a reference to Shakespeare’s classic tragedy “King Lear” this is a modern-day rocked up tragedy of one man whose experience can be shared by many.

About ‘The EP’

Cordelia evokes themes of heartache, melancholia, catharsis and emotional claustrophobia. It is about feelings which often transcend our ability to describe them in words. With his idiosyncratic ear for melody and hooks, and a dynamic sense of opposites (light and dark, loud and quiet, bitter and sweet etc.), Ollie Trevers fires a salvo of emotionally charged numbers that cull influence from across the spectrum of popular guitar music. Cordelia is a narrative of heartbreak, showing the duality of relationships and their untimely endings. It is an exploration of unrequited love and its causes and effects: depression, addiction, disillusionment and longing.
