San Diego, California-based songwriter Big Yen, aka James Frolio, introduces his brand-new single, “Trips Me Out.” Explaining his distinctive name – Big Yen – James says, “Yen, in Chinese, means a lifelong yearning or desire. In this case, Big Yen is the desire to make an impact and inspire others. It even begs the question: What’s your Big Yen?”
James, who recently moved from Charleston, South Carolina to sunny San Diego, has been recording in the studio for years. With the move to SoCal, he merges southern singer/songwriter savors with his new-found Golden State sonic palette.
Unfettered by genre, Big Yen features a rotating line up of James’ friends and collaborators, which results in a sound blending elements of punk, hip-hop, pop, and lush melodies into multicolored songs. In 2020, Big Yen released his debut single, “Backflip,” produced by John Shields of Little Stranger, followed by releasing his self-titled debut EP. A full-length debut album will drop in early 2022.
“Trips Me Out” opens on clacking percussion flowing into a potent punk-flavoured guitar pushing out hefty thrumming energy. Tight, popping drums give the rhythm wild pulsations as James’ edgy voice, vaguely reminiscent of The Offspring, imbues the lyrics with revelatory informality.
Simultaneously innovative and raw, “Trips Me Out” delivers the visceral austerity of Jack White amalgamated with the restlessness of punk rock.
