TRACK OF THE DAY: “VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR” – Bruce Woolley and Polly Scattergood

Following the critically acclaimed version of Video Killed The Radio Star (Dark Star) released earlier this year, Gramophone records is delighted to announce the release of a new remix in collaboration with Steve Dub, renowned producer, mixer, programmer and songwriter who has worked with some of the most influential artists of the past 20 years such as The Chemical Brothers.

Bruce Woolley who was one of the original writers of the song (along with Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes) has now collaborated closely with Steve Dub to produce the vocoder-inspired “Dub Science” version. This “Director’s cut” remix was also chosen to trail MTV’s 2017 Music Video Awards in Los Angeles – broadcast yesterday at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

Video Killed The Radio Star” is internationally one of the most instantly recognisable songs of all time; written by Bruce Woolley, Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes – the original Buggles music video is famous for being the first ever shown on MTV when it launched in 1981. The MTV spot for “Dub Science” acknowledges the song’s historic role, and the film stylistically pays a coded homage to a number of classic videos and artists – Britney, Madonna, Michael Jackson – while incorporating the channel’s iconic use of an Astronaut holding a flag bearing the company’s logo.

As with “Dark Star”, “Dub Science” features the vocals of British singer-songwriter Polly Scattergood (Polly Scattergood, Arrows and On Dead Waves – Mute Records). Both tracks are produced by Bruce Woolley and Keypad, and the artists appear with The Radio Science Orchestra. The single was released 25th August on Gramophone Records for streaming and download. The new “Video Killed The Radio Star” video edit will feature cameo appearances from synthesiser pioneer Thomas Dolby and The Retronaut’s Wolfgang Wild, typography/design by Paul Sizer and animations by renowned Video Artist Louise Bellairs (The Art of Scared Geometry)
