TRACK OF THE DAY: THE TWILIGHT SAD – ‘It Was Never the Same’ / ‘Oran Mor Sessions’

THE TWILIGHT SAD - return with Òran Mór Session LP; available from October 16th

What a year it has been for The Twilight Sad. The release of their stellar album, “Nobody Wants to be Here, and Nobody Wants to Leave “ in late October of 2014 catapulted them onto another level in the musical business and gaining them rave reviews and a slew of new fans. A headlining tour through the US and Europe was capped off by safe to say the band’s favorite moment of the year, when The Cure Frontman Robert Smith collaborating with the band on a cover of their single “ There’s a Girl In the Corner”.

Just when things couldn’t possibly get any better for fans or the band, there comes the announcement that the band is releasing the “Oran Mor Sessions.” The album is a collection of acoustic treatments of selected songs from the album, b-sides and a cover of Arthur Russell’s “I Couldn’t Say it to Your Face”.

The first release off the new album is a stripped back version of “It was Never the Same”, with Andy MacFarlane’s beautiful guitar accompaniment and James Graham’s heartfelt vocals. If you thought the original release of “Nobody Want to be Here …” was amazing, the stripped back version, sets the stage for an even more exciting release on October 16 working within the bare structures of the song. He knocks the paint off the back of the room with his convincing rendition of the song. This version makes it hard to choose which I like better the original or acoustic and makes the anticipation for the entire release a delightful agony.
