TRACK OF THE DAY: THE FEELING - 'Spiralling'

The Feeling have announced the release of new single Spiralling, (listen below) which will be the first single from their self-titled fifth album The Feeling, both released on 4th March. In making their fifth album, The Feeling boldly went where not many bands in the last 30 years have gone before: they decided to record the entire thing in just a few days, as a fully live band.

Following on from Wicked Heart, the first introduction to the new album, first single Spiralling perfectly showcases both Dan Gillespie Sells strong vocal and the live recording of the band’s new album in both its sound and the video. Premiered on Radio 2, it is an honest and emotive track that begins delicately before launching into a guitar-led expansive chorus.

Gillespie Sells says; “It meant writing a simple song which didn’t need a lot of additional production to make it work. Just 5 players in a studio and that’s it. We enjoyed the challenge of working this way.”

The plan with the band’s fifth album was to capture the spirit and musicianship that has made them such a successful live draw for the past decade (this summer alone, they were booked for more than 25 festivals across Europe). In that spirit, the band abandoned the standard studio time-keeper of a click track (making editing together pieces of different takes nigh-on impossible) and recorded the songs one at a time, in full takes. The best takes are the ones that made the album.

“We did do a lot of rehearsing and planning,” says Gillespie Sells, who had written this latest collection of powerful, literate and downright catchy songs over the previous year. “But when it came to pressing record, it was just a really fired-up live band in a room playing together.”

The Feeling is a raw and passionate album and it’s also why its title is self-titled, because this, more than any of their previous records, is what they really sound like. The album is available to pre-order now from www.pledgemusic.com/thefeeling.

The Feeling performed a sold out exclusive show at the end of last year at London’s Oslo, where they performed the new album, and some old favourites, entirely for the first time. Further live dates will be announced soon.
