TRACK OF THE DAY: THE DUKE SPIRIT – ‘Blue and Yellow Light’

Listen to 'Blue and Yellow Light' the new track from THE DUKE SPIRIT

London 4-piece The Duke Spirit have announced the first single ‘Blue & Yellow Light’ from their eagerly anticipated new album ‘KIN’ will be released November 12th. The song was produced by Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins, Bella Union) and features backing vocals from long time band friend Mark Lanegan. The band will celebrate their return by playing the historic Wilton’s Music Hall on October 22nd. It sold out almost immediately so they have just announced a new London date at Islington Assembly Hall on February 24th.

Singer Liela Moss on new single ‘Blue and Yellow Light’:

“This track is a celebration of coincidence, it’s me enjoying the magic of how and who you meet in intimate places. Last year I spent a long time in some kind of hyper vigilant state, a kind of shocked mode, following the loss of someone very dear to me. I became watchful of the tiniest details. Everything was glowing, I was in love with life but had this menace, this sad shadow I was trying to shake off. The lyrics for this song stepped out and presented themselves, like the particles of light I was watching spread out upon the landscape, against the sky and across peoples faces. I’m writing about that mindful, innocent, adoring and sexual way you look at the world when you are overwhelmed”.

The album ‘KIN’ was recorded at Urchin Studios, East London and is brimming with new sounds amid a vibrant energy, flecked with sublimely delicate, intimate spaces, and as such feels like a landmark recording for a band that are now in their 12th year. This is a band that make music for the sheer love of it. ‘Blue and Yellow Light’ is a formidable album opener from The Duke Spirit, who in ten glorious songs have resurfaced effortlessly and quietly, with one of the most exhilarating albums of the year.

Liela Moss (words, vocals and piano) who has always been a captivating presence, has never sounded this good on record and with Toby Butler (bass, guitars, synth and piano) Luke Ford (guitars) and Olly Betts (drums) it is a stunning return to the fray from a band we really have missed.
