Track Of The Day: The Anchoress - ‘Doesn’t Kill You’ - Watch video

Doesn’t Kill You will knock you back on your heels, the song is shimmering and enchanting. Davies voice is mesmerizing on this ballad. The song is beautifully conceived, performed and produced. The best words to describe it are dramatic, lush and satisfying.

‘Doesn’t Kill You’ is taken from her debut album ‘Confessions of a Romance Novelist and is released on 17th June backed with a brand new remix by Gavin Miller (Worriedaboutsatan/Ghosting Season).

The video for the single was directed by Annick Wolfers (Vivienne Westwood, Vogue Italia), and narrates what Catherine describes as a “metaphorical battle between the super-ego and the id”, featuring Charlie Gilmour (son of David Gilmour) as her androgynous alter ego in this Bowie-inspired short film, styled by costume designer Natasha Lawes.

Garnering comparisons to John Grant, Lana Del Rey and Kate Bush, Catherine’s previous single received heavy rotation from BBC 6Music and lit up the web, going to number 2 on the HypeMachine and number 11 on the AppleMusic video chart. The Anchoress’ debut album, which she co-produced with Mansun’s Paul Draper, has been lauded by the music press, racked as one of HMV’s “best albums of 2016” and has found fans in the likes of Peter Gabriel (who selected it for his album club), Manic Street Preachers, and more.

Catherine spent much of 2015 touring the arenas of the UK & Europe playing with Simple Minds to over 500,000 people. Catherine has recently begun performing live under The Anchoress guise, and will perform her debut album in its entirety, with a full band and string section at the Bush Hall in London on June 15th 2016 to precede with this single release on the 17th. She will also be appearing at Latitude Festival and Edinburgh Fringe.

Following a packed out performance headlining the BBC Introducing Stage at the Great Escape in Brighton last weekend, The Anchoress (aka Catherine AD) has been confirmed as support to Manic Street Preachers at the Eden Project on 9th July. Catherine says on the Manic Street Preachers:

“As a music fan first and foremost, I hope I’ll never grow out of the thrill of being acknowledged by some of my musical and cultural heroes. It was such a privilege to spend 18 months touring with Simple Minds and now I’m thrilled to finally be able to announce that I will be supporting the Manic Street Preachers on July 9th at the Eden Project. It’s such a huge honour to be asked by Mr. Nicky Wire who was something of a surrogate teacher for me growing up. The Manics are a band that completely changed and shaped my life, turning me into a book-bothering library fiend who was the first in my family to go to university… All because of a rock and roll band. I feel I can safely retire now knowing that my 12 year old self would feel satisfied with how things turned out!”

Catherine is currently working on a new album with Bernard Butler and has co-written 7 tracks on Paul Draper’s forthcoming solo album.
