TRACK OF THE DAY: SPOOKYLAND - BIG HEAD

On the eve of their arrival back in the states, Sydney-based quartet Spookyland have shared new single Big Head along with details of their appearances at SXSW the band will also be supporting Jake Bugg for his Chicago and New York dates and playing a headline show in New York.

A marked progression from their debut Rock & Roll Weakling EP, Big Head is an impressive showcase of Marcus Gordon’s striking vocal and distinctive lyrical style. Speaking of the track, vocalist Marcus Gordon says:

“’Big Head’ is giving gender tradition a little rattle, but as the bald face love song, not the straight-laced facebook post. I was trying to celebrate the promiscuous woman; raise up some kind of female James Dean.”

The band last visited Europe in 2014 following a successful trip to New York for that year’s CMJ Music Marathon. Upon returning home, the band – already recipients of much acclaim from the Australian media, stepped back to concentrate on writing new songs providing the backbone of Beauty Already Beautiful.

An appearance at 2015’s Lollapolooza in Chicago – hailed by Consequence of Sound as one of their Top Ten acts not to miss– afforded the band time to head off to ARC Studios in Omaha, Nebraska; home of producer Mike Mogis and location of recent recordings of First Aid Kit, Jenny Lewis and Bright Eyes amongst others. There they recorded the album with Sydney native and long-time collaborator Tony Buchen at the helm.
