In the No Air’ is the bouncing, playful new psych-pop single from Robbing Millions, taken from their forthcoming self-title debut out 25th November on [PIAS] Belgium.
The track is an ode to Robert Wyatt’s number of the same name, and describes a bickering couple with a dog who have fallen on hard times. Their last hope is a holiday which they then appear unable to afford. Complete with the ultimate anti-hero phrase: “When I go out I picture myself in a movie – I am the hero who’s lost a lot of weight.”
Off the back of this release the band will be playing at Pitchfork’s Avant Garde Block Party in Paris on October 26th.
The group, lead by former improvisational jazz guitarist Lucian Fraipont and his childhood friend and cartoonist Gaspard Ryelandt, recorded their album during a 2-week stint in New York in 2015 with none other than cult wizard Nicolas Vernhes, known for his work with Deerhunter, Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective and The War on Drugs, behind the controls. Between mix sessions, they performed no fewer than 8 shows during the CMJ Music Marathon festival as well as going out on support tours for Metronomy and Balthazar, and giving amazing performances at Pukkelpop, Paleo Festival, The Great Escape and Leefest.
As well as taking inspiration from bands in the new psychedelic school as detailed above, Robbing Millions’ sound is also influenced by pop, rock, jazz and traditional Congolese music. These spread of influences coupled with Fraipont and Ryelandt’s unique vocal harmonies gives Robbing Millions a sound of their own.
