TRACK OF THE DAY: Polar States New Single - 'ROADS'

Polar States release their new single Roads alongside their music video this month (24th May). This is their first release with Larry Hibbitt producer for Sundara Karma and Nothing But Thieves. This is another slice of taut, contemporary indie guitar pop from the Liverpool-based band. It’s another heartfelt, story from the collective with tight drums, jangly Celtic sounding guitar and brooding lyrics.

Since forming in 2015 releasing their debut single, Concrete, about a homeless couple who vocalist Paul Tong met on the streets of Liverpool, they caught the attention of Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and Phil Taggart, as well as 6 music’s Steve Lamacq who pushed the band in front of a national audience before they had set foot on stage together.

Their follow-up single Elizabeth ended up on the Best of BBC Introducing playlist, the TOPMAN playlist, entered the UK iTunes singles chart and went on to be featured on Hollyoaks and Sky Sports.

The band have a strong focus on writing having written over 120 songs. Paul, Josh, Phil & Jack used their demos to build an organic online fanbase of over 21,000 by sending them out via Instagram. As they say: “The idea of creating our own approach as an unsigned band is really exciting for us, why would you want to just be yet another indie band hoping people might pay attention? We’re not nearly cool enough to stand out in that crowd anyway, this is us finding our own crowd.”

It’s definitely paying off as they have created a very loyal following. They’ve recently played the Liverpool Sound City and The Great Escape Festival. Since Roads release last week they have had 10,000 streams in the first 48 hours and been shortlisted for the YNOT Festival out of thousands of bands. They’re certainly creating a storm.

Catch Polar States at Manchester’s Night and Day Café on Friday, June 8th.
