TRACK OF THE DAY: CATHEDRALS & CARS - ‘Art School'

It’s been a long time coming for the Suffolk based Dark-Indie outfit. After losing two of their original members (with one joining the military), they went into hiatus, leaving behind two previous EPs, a full length album and the elusive ‘missing’ single which was never released…

They disassembled the DIY label they started together at college (Cemetery Bench Records), and each member went away to plan the band’s new sound and direction – This gave a whole year for one member to build and operate his own recording studio, Hunter Club Recording Studio – which incidentally became the residency for the new recordings.

Split between Brighton, Cambridge and Bury St. Edmunds, and now reformed as a quartet, Jack Stevens (vocals and guitar), Christopher Stagg (Guitar), Danny Robertson (bass), and Steve Long (drums) returned with their new single, ‘The Concierge’, just before Christmas, and the second track ‘Art School’ is a sonic step-up from the former. The song is an energetic listen, with abrasive bass lines playing against well-crafted and seamlessly blended guitar melodies. Vocally, Stevens displays beautiful imagery in a metaphorical and theatrical scene, in the sentimental imagery of formally hedonistic times.
