TRACK OF THE DAY: BILLY BIBBY – THIS KIND OF SUMMER

TRACK OF THE DAY: BILLY BIBBY - THIS KIND OF SUMMER

Formerly débuted acoustically and well-received in Billy Bibby’s 2015 live solo shows, This Kind of Summer is a well crafted pop song with sentimental, catchy choruses. Recorded with his new backing band, Rob Jones, Matt Thomas and Mike Pearce AKA The Wry Smiles, Billy and the lads have rebuilt the sound to feature chromatic vocals, carefully and cleverly applied crescendos, harmonics and infectious drum rhythms. Nothing less that you would expect from a founding member of Catfish and the Bottlemen.

When asked about how the track came to be Billy said “This kind of summer actually came about when I heard the song ‘Summer’ by Calvin Harris! Not that I wanted to write a song anything like his, but it made me feel good when I heard it. I just put together some experiences of my own that had happened in the summer and decided to write a song that hopefully makes you feel a warm buzz inside.”

While we continually make reference to the former, Billy’s songwriting style combined with his own, clean-cut vocals set him well apart from his past endeavours and creates something more true to himself. In the same vein as their previous single, Waitin’ for You, he has combined his talents with classic songwriting styles, creating something approachable and familiar, but also fresh and new.

With a relentless gig-schedule planned for 2016 (see below for dates) Billy is maintaining his hard work ethic which was a key instrument in CATB’s massive success. With his talent for songwriting becoming more refined, it will surely follow with similar success in his new venture and he’ll undoubtedly be nipping at the heels of more established acts without his experience this year.

This Kind of Summer will feature on Billy Bibby and The Wry Smiles’ début EP Bide Your Time which will be released on 5th February 2016.
