Tanita Tikaram Announces New Single ‘Cool Waters’ - Listen

One of the UK’s most distinctive voices, Tanita Tikaram, will release new single ‘Cool Waters’ on 3rd March 2017, taken from critically acclaimed album ‘Closer To The People’.

“Cool Waters’ is the song from the album that seems to have a special meaning for people. It’s so satisfying as a songwriter that the theme of a lost love or the memory of a passion that can’t last but still lingers in the memory, strongly connects with listeners. And a relief to know that the world is full of hopeless romantics like myself!” (Tanita Tikaram)

Tikaram headlines the Barbican, London on Friday 24th February, reappraising songs from her 28-year career playing renowned classics such as ‘Twist In My Sobriety’ and her favourites from her nine albums including ‘Ancient Heart’ ‘Lovers In The City’, ‘The Cappuccino Songs’ and the latest jazz and blues influenced ‘Closer To The People’.

Welsh jazz singer and keyboardist Ian Shaw and illustrator James Mayhew will be joining Tanita on stage as well as her 7-piece band which includes Helen O’ Hara on violin (Denys Midnight Runners), saxophonist Martin Winning (Van Morrison, John Martyn) and Bartosz Glowacki who is part of a new breed of accordionists.

Taint’s story starts as a 6th former, solitary and captivated by literature, the daughter of an Indo-Fijian father and Malaysian mother from an armed forces background whose family had settled in Basingstoke. That September came something sparse and self-contained: ‘Ancient Heart’, the self-written debut album by a just-turned-19-year-old from Hampshire.

’Ancient Heart’ was an autumnal record comprised of non-rock instruments such as oboe and flugelhorn, and, at its centre, a dark, torch voice that belied Tanita Tikaram’s youth. In 1988, an album so stark and melancholy was an anomaly, but one that sold 4 million copies and produced four chart singles. The first, ‘Good Tradition’, reached the Top 10, and the next, ‘Twist in My Sobriety’, has since been covered by a dozen artists, including a heady electronic take by Liza Minnelli.

Tikaram’s ninth studio album, ‘Closer to the People’, is her first since ‘Can’t Go Back’ in 2012, and is the work of a still-private individual whose songwriting skills have matured along with her singing, and is her most musicianly yet, with songs influenced by Anita O’Day, Philip Glass, Thelonious Monk and her continuing love for country & soul music.
