Tamu Massif Shares New Single - OK

Tamu Massif is sharing a new single, ‘OK’, the latest track to emerge from a forthcoming EP, following previous release ‘Holding Back’, a Spotify viral hit which has now accrued over 140,000 plays. The new EP is due in late 2016, the follow-up to 2015’s incredibly well-received debut EP, Alba, which was supported at radio by BBC Introducing alongside spins at Radio 1, 6Music and Radio X, with tastemaker blog support. Having previously supported the likes of C Duncan and The Japanese House live, headline dates from Tamu Massif are also shortly to be announced.

‘OK’ finds Dave Dixon re-calibrating the tender, emotionally intelligent world of his sobriquet Tamu Massif around the closing phase of a fading friendship. Says Dixon of the new track; “I wrote most of ‘OK’ while visiting friends in Naples for New Year’s Eve last year. I had on my mind a particular situation with a friend I don’t see all that often these days, and it got me thinking about the way relationships change. I guess it’s about coming to terms with that change; when you feel like you’re losing someone close to you.”

The jarring nature of becoming resigned to a strained relationship amidst the ebullient chaos of an Italian NYE plays out in quite literal fashion across ‘OK’, which intersperses snippets of the bangs and explosions of firecrackers (which Dixon recorded from his balcony), with skittering, heart-beat bass and pitch-shifted vocals to transportive effect. “The city goes crazy for it– it sounds like a warzone. I sampled the sound of the celebrations in the second half of the song- I thought it’d be interesting to contrast those celebrations with something more contemplative and melancholic lyrically.”

Written and produced by Dixon in his Weston-super-Mare home studio (with mixing courtesy of Youth Lagoon & Perfume Genius associate Ali Chant), ‘OK’ finds him further synthesising the pop-leaning and bass-heavy, sample-driven elements of a remarkably fully formed solo project. Whilst his musical alias may have drawn its name from a dormant subaquatic volcano, you sense that the growing ripples Tamu Massif is causing will be felt for some distance yet.
