Album Of The Month, May 2015

Death & Vanilla – To Where The Wild Things Are (Fire)

Death & Vanilla – To Where The Wild Things AreDiscounting last year’s ‘re-imagined’ soundtrack “Vampyr”, “To Where The Wild Things Are” is only the second album from Sweden’s Death & Vanilla. Existing somewhere between the ‘library’, synth-sounds of the Ghost Box label and the classic, baroque-pop sound of 60s French cinema, Death & Vanilla are perfect replacements for the much-missed Broadcast. This album is a great starting point for the uninitiated. It’s an accessible mix of shimmering, pop haze and the warm, dusty sound of the vintage instruments and equipment used in the recording process. For fans of The Belbury Poly, The Left Banke and The Free Design.

Saun & Starr – Look Closer (Daptone)

Saun & Starr – Look Closer (Daptone)Following their 2014 single, ‘Hot Shot’, the biggest selling Daptone 45 ever, longtime backing singers for Sharon Jones, Saundra Williams and Starr Duncan Lowe, release their debut album, “Look Closer”. Recorded with the Dap-Kings, this highly anticipated release was produced by Daptone’s Gabriel Roth and features 10 original tracks, including that now infamous ‘breakout’ hit from last year. There are shades of “Part Time Love” by Ann Peebles or “The Supremes Produced And Arranged By Jimmy Webb” in an album full of classic Soul tunes. The Daptone label can currently do no wrong.

Girls’ Names – Zero Triptych (Tough Love)

Girls’ Names – Zero Triptych (Tough Love)Girls’ Names return with an 11-minute version of Zero Triptych on this one-sided 12” on Tough Love. It’s a gloriously swirling piece of Indie-rock which leaves behind the band’s early psych-surf sound for a new, pounding Post-Punk / New Wave direction. This song has been around for almost two years and the band felt the need to close the chapter on this mix before recording new material but if their recent, jaw-dropping performance at The Menagerie is a pointer, the new album will be a belter. (Limited to 350 copies)

Holly Herndon – Platform (4AD)

Holly Herndon – Platform (4AD)“Platform” blends the minimal experimentation of Philip Glass with the intricate electronic structures of Autechre and the pop nous of Lonelady. Couple these attributes with Herndon’s abstract vocal techniques and you get an artist, singular in her vision and a sound which is obtuse and difficult to decipher. There are elements of a more straight-forward and simple nature. The beats are simple. The bass hollow but although the record lacks cohesion, there is much to admire here. Herndon’s vocals soften with each successive listen and lyrical motifs and melodies emerge from the angular nature of the music. File with Laurel Halo and Jenny Hval. An un-easy yet rewarding listen.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis – Loin Des Hommes (Goliath Entertainment)

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis – Loin Des Hommes (Goliath Entertainment)Nick Cave & Warren Ellis return to the soundtrack oeuvre with their eighth collaboration, “Loin Des Hommes”, a David Olehoffen movie adapted from a short story by Albert Camus. Similar in feel to “The Proposition”, this tale of divided loyalties and colonial violence has a familiar sparse, yet moving feel, incorporating Ellis’ trademark weeping strings with Cave’s need for drone and jarring electronics. Cave and Ellis create film scores which are elegantly minimal and instantly recognizable, built around intertwined piano and violin melodies, fleshed out with guitar, flute, mandolin and percussion as they use sombre, instrumental tracks to evoke the desolation of the frontier towns and arid deserts of their subject matter. Bleak ? Sure, but beautiful, none the less.

The Cramps – Songs The Lord Taught Us (Vinilisssimo)

The Cramps – Songs The Lord Taught Us (Vinilisssimo)Another re-issue of this glorious 1980 debut from the greatest band to ever walk the planet. “Songs The Lord Taught Us” is a lean explosion of filthy, trashy, B-movie noir influenced by traditional 50’s Rock ‘N’ Roll, Punk and the band’s love of cheap, crappy Horror movies. What made The Cramps great, apart from the twin, fucked-up assault of deranged, Rock ‘N’ Roll psychosis that was Lux and Ivy, was their ability to transform 50’s pop standards (Fever) into their own brand of menacing sleaze and a conniosseur’s ear for forgotten Punk Rock gems (Strychnine, Tear It Up). Add to this an ability to write simple, classic trash anthems (Zombie Dance, Rock On The Moon) and Alex Chilton’s subtle additions and here you have possibly the greatest debut album since The Ramones. Special mention must go to ‘Mystery Plane’, which is, quite simply, the funniest interpretation of illegitimacy ever written. This album changed my life.
