Album Of The Month, May 2015

Death & Vanilla – To Where The Wild Things Are (Fire)

Death & Vanilla – To Where The Wild Things AreDiscounting last year’s ‘re-imagined’ soundtrack “Vampyr”, “To Where The Wild Things Are” is only the second album from Sweden’s Death & Vanilla. Existing somewhere between the ‘library’, synth-sounds of the Ghost Box label and the classic, baroque-pop sound of 60s French cinema, Death & Vanilla are perfect replacements for the much-missed Broadcast. This album is a great starting point for the uninitiated. It’s an accessible mix of shimmering, pop haze and the warm, dusty sound of the vintage instruments and equipment used in the recording process. For fans of The Belbury Poly, The Left Banke and The Free Design.

Mikal Cronin – MC III (Merge)

Mikal Cronin – MC IIIAway from his day-job of playing bass in Ty Segall’s touring band, Mikal Cronin has previously recorded two albums of jangly, Byrds-ian gorgeousness. “III” doesn’t stray too far from the West-coast melodies meets Psych-folk sound of the first two albums but is further proof that Cronin deserves to stand shoulder to shoulder with his more-prolific employer. The five-song-suite, which takes up the whole of side two, was inspired by Cronin’s time living in the Pacific North-West and contains several moments of garage-rock magnificence. File somewhere between Jacco Gardner and Thee Oh Sees. Sublime.

The Super Furry Animals – Mwng (Domino)

The Super Furry Animals – Mwng (Domino)This fifteen-year anniversary re-issue of “Mwng”, the Super Furries Welsh-language, fourth album is long-overdue. In the wake of it’s original release, the band were feted in the House Of Commons for their endeavours to promote their native tongue but any fan will tell you that when they first appeared, we were all convinced they were singing in Welsh all along. Mwng appeared during a particularly creative high-point in the band’s history. Inspired by Meic Stevens, this was the point where they left behind the lazy, un-warranted Brit-pop associations and ventured towards the sonic stratosphere of “Rings Around The World”. ‘Ysbeidiay Heulog’ (Welsh for Sunny Intervals) is possibly the greatest pop song ever written. Essential.

Joanna Gruesome – Peanut Butter (Fortuna POP)

Joanna Gruesome – Peanut Butter (Fortuna POP)According to the press release, Cardiff’s Joanna Gruesome’s wrote their second album, Peanut Butter, in direct response to the threat posed by rival bands. They have used this inspiration to produce a fantastic, concise blast of hook-laden, noisy pop songs in a similar vein to Bikini Kill or Bratmobile. There are potential singles at every turn on this record and with ten songs in little over 25 minutes, none of these tunes over-stay their welcome. ‘Last Year’ or ‘Jamie (Luvver)’ are near-perfect examples of melodic, fuzzy indie-pop. Rival bands beware.

Various Artists – Perfect Motion: Jon Savage’s Secret History Of Second-Wave Psychedelia 1988-1993 (Caroline True)

PM_Artwork_Front_largeCaroline True follow up the success of last year’s “A Crushing Glow” compilation with Jon Savage’s take on the Baggy / Acid period around the turn of the 1990s. Jon posits this period as a return to Psychedelia. Its second phase, where guitars met Acid-House to create a whole new noise. A thrilling musical time, encapsulated by his quote from the liner notes, “new drugs + new technology + dance music = a new pop culture. Many of the records come from that first surge. Alongside key tracks by 808 State, the Stone Roses & Pet Shop Boys, we have left-field offerings by Joi and Dimensional Holofonic Sound – and three tracks with the involvement of the UK’s presiding genius from this period, Andrew Weatherall. This is the first time that The Pet Shop Boys/Stone Roses/St Etienne tracks have ever been committed to vinyl. The Primal Scream / 808 State tracks have not been available on wax for over 20 years. An important document of a shift in the balance of power.
