Who broke Ryan Adams’ heart? That’s the question I find myself asking every time I listen to a new album from the prolific singer/songwriter. I find myself asking the question again on his latest self-titled LP. No one writes about love, loss, and struggle like Ryan Adams.
It’s the Ryan Adams that many have come to know and love, and listeners will find a comfortable place to rest in this album. Musically Ryan Adams is a guitar driven album. Much of the album is a throwback to the sounds of the mid-70’s and 80’s, in particular, Gimme Something Good, Trouble, and Stay With Me.
Standouts on the album are the songs that expose the raw, self-doubt that Adams can’t seem to shake. Songs like Am I Safe and Wrecking Ball are solid singles that beg for repeat listens.
The last track on the album, Let Go, is a genuinely tender moment. The lyrics Cross your fingers behind your back/And lie/Tell me it’s okay if you’ll fix everything/’Cause I let go are the most vulnerable on the album.
A three year break between albums and Adams can still break our hearts.
