REVIEW: SONNY GREEN - Grime is Punk EP

Southend-on-Sea’s resident Grime MC, Sonny Green, releases his Grime is Punk EP on 6/5/16. Now in his early 20s, he’s been giving more established peers a run for their money since the age of 14. This is as far from my normal taste as it gets but on hearing his single Bars, something grabbed me that I couldn’t put my finger on. On deeper listens, buried amongst his rhymes I found it.

In a sea of other similar artists, what makes Sonny stand out from the crowd is that he calls it as he sees it and his angry lyrical tirades are completely uncompromising, unmaterialistic and calls out everyone from David Cameron to his peers without fear. Unfortunately they are also self-gratifying and glorifying which, while it is all too common in this genre, let down what could have been something very different.

Equally common to the genre is the vocabulary which has more f words than Gordon Ramsey on a rant and the predicable inclusion of the odd “c**t” can be seen from the first word that vaguely rhymes with it 3 lines in advance, for example “Runt” or even “Punk”. The language is likely to appeal to teens that want to upset their parents, especially taking into account the eloquently titled Fuck Off. That plus his political standpoint will undoubtedly sell records and while his lyrical ethos is sound it’s been carried off somewhat unintelligently for my taste and without a shred of positivity.

If I’m totally honest, I’m not likely to buy this EP, but nor am I likely to turn the radio off if he comes on. I wish him luck Essex Boy to Essex Boy, but I’m not a fan.
