REVIEW: Reevah - A Different Light EP

Derry songwriter Reevah, aka Aoife Boyle, released her second EP A Different Light on April 24. The latest EP is the follow up to her 2018 EP Hummingbird. Reevah has drawn significant attention with her emotionally attuned lyrics and luminous vocals. A Different Light once again serves up an amuse-bouche of prescient lyrics filled with emotion.

In addition to her studio work, Reevah has significant live experience supporting a number of performers including SOAK, Lisa Hannigan, Wyvern Lingo and Duke Special. In 2018 she collaborated with the Ulster Orchestra and has played a number of festivals.

A Different Light was produced by Declan Legge and delivers four tracks. The recording opens with “You Said Tell Me” which harkens to the sonics of Florence Welsh, Sarah Mclachlan and Ellie Rowsell while displaying her own unique voice. This slice of Indie Folk is energetic and poppy as it emphasizes that a worry shared is a worry halved. The song builds to satisfying anthemic crescendo at its close. The track “Older Now” marries Irish balladry to a Fleetwood Mac 70’s Southern California vibe producing another alluring offering. The song’s slower tempo is apt as it ruminates over bittersweet reflections on a relationship and how the inner child remains.

The single release off the EP is “Weight of the World” which is a real showcase of Reevah’s vocals. The theme of the track is the struggles of the human condition. There is much to admire on the track; the emphatic drums, engaging guitar licks and the throbbing bass. Each of these elements along with her spiralling vocal creates an alluring tapestry of sonic narrative that makes for a solid single. The final selection “Real Enough” ponders the inequity in a romantic relationship where one or the other loves more or is more committed to the relationship. Reevah questions the true reality of a lover’s feelings and the possibility those feeling are all an illusion. The decision to utilize a piano ballad format is a perfect platform for this reflective track.

Reevah with A Different Light has produced another winning EP that should fuel her rise to bigger things. Her songwriting is gripping and the musical accompaniments are apt to back up her lyrical ruminations. She is insightful enough to give the listener just enough quality snippets of her musical skills to build anticipation for a full-length release.
