ON THE TURNTABLE: Shuggie Otis - Here Comes Shuggie Otis

Short, sharp and frank reviews from a confessed vinyl junkie. I’ll be posting my most loved records and most recent purchases right here for your perusal every week.

Debut album from the multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist Californian, recorded in ‘69 when he was just fifteen years of age. The criminally underrated Psychedelic Soul/Blues/Jazz performer only released a handful of albums in the 70s, which unfortunately went unnoticed for the most part, until The Brothers Johnson had a hit with his song ‘Strawberry Letter 23’ in ‘77. (Shuggie’s version is far superior).

It’s hard to believe that this album was created by a then fifteen-year-old. The musicianship is incredible and laden with laid back funky Blues and Soul featuring guitar licks aplenty, big bad bass lines, honky-tonk piano and big meaty beats. Get on it. You won’t be disappointed.
