The debut album from NYC’s finest was released on this day 29 years ago. Nas often pops up in the GOAT lists, and this album stands testament to that claim; it’s pure, undiluted East Coast Hip Hop done to perfection.
The production duties are off the scale, including DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, Large Professor and Nas himself; it’s a who’s who of 90s beatmakers. There isn’t one skip track on here, but the standout moment would have to go to the absolute ANTHEM ‘Halftime’.
The likelihood is you’ve heard this album; if you haven’t, then stop whatever you’re doing and play it right now. Hip Hop turns 50 this year, and this was made smack bang in the middle of the so-called ‘Golden Era’; it doesn’t get much better.
