ON THE TURNTABLE: Mavis Staples - You Are Not Alone

Short, sharp and frank reviews from a confessed vinyl junkie. I’ll be posting my most loved records and most recent purchases right here for your perusal every week.

Ninth solo studio album from the legendary Gospel and Soul singer. Originally released in 2010, Mavis’ ninth solo offering is remarkable, especially given the fact she was 71 at the time of recording it.

The album features an array of Soul, Gospel and Blues belters written by her much-missed Dad ‘Pops Staples’ as well as killer tracks from Allen Toussaint and Jeff Tweedy, the latter also performing on and producing the album. Much like Rick Rubin’s production on the Johnny Cash recordings, Tweedy understands that little is more and brings out the warmth and depth in Mavis’ voice as well as sticking to a real honest, bass-heavy, full sound from the band.

Tweedy also penned the title song, which is the stand out tune for me. It’s ‘stop you in your tracks’ good. File under ‘very pleasing indeed’.
