ON THE TURNTABLE: Marxist Love Disco Ensemble – MLDE

Marxist Love Disco Ensemble

Short, sharp and frank reviews from a confessed vinyl junkie. I’ll post my most loved records and recent purchases here for your perusal weekly.

The debut album from this Italian project has all the dry wit of an Alex Cameron or Neil Hannon record on steroids. With its tongue-in-cheek take on the left and how to squeeze lyrics about poverty, despair and unity into a Disco tune, it’s hard not to fall in love with it.

This is by no means a gimmicky album, though; the musicianship throughout is fantastic. Using only analogue equipment and older recording techniques, it sounds just like the Soviet Disco that has influenced it. Bouncy bass lines and great percussion is the vibe here, and whilst some of the lead vocals may take some getting used to, once you’re in, it all makes sense. Who says political opinion can’t be fun(ky)? Another brilliant release from Mr Bongo.
