ON THE TURNTABLE: Joy Orbison – Still Slipping Vol.1

ON THE TURNTABLE: Joy Orbison - Still Slipping Vol.1

Short, sharp and frank reviews from a confessed vinyl junkie. I’ll be posting my most loved records and most recent purchases right here for your perusal every week.

Debut album from the South London based Dub Step/House/Garage pioneer. Peter O’Grady, AKA Joy Orbison, has spent the last decade releasing many singles and remixes and putting on his own hugely successful nights in London and Manchester. This album feels like an accumulation of that.

He’s said of the release that he wanted it to sound like a mixtape, and I’d say that’s job done, and very well at that. The album begins with his Dad and a mate talking about 80s casual gear, which slowly morphs into ‘Sparko’ and from there on in, we’re treated to an array of squelches, bleeps, dub-by bass lines, beats and soundscapes interspersed with various family members and friends chatting away and leaving voice messages throughout.

JO has created an extremely worthwhile journey through the sounds he’s been influenced by over the last decade and has made a perfect album to get lost in. Impressive stuff.
