ON THE TURNTABLE: Ishmael Ensemble - Visions of Light

Short, sharp and frank reviews from a confessed vinyl junkie. I’ll be posting my most loved records and most recent purchases right here for your perusal every week.

Sophomore album from the Bristolian Jazz/Electronica quintet. If you’re not familiar with these guys, correct that immediately. They take Jazz and turn it on its head with a mixture of shuffling house beats, dub-y soundscapes and epic rhythms.

‘Visions of Light’ is part Angel Heart soundtrack era Courtney Pine mixed with Thom Yorke, Bjork and a dose of Hot Chip after a rave in 1991. Standout track ‘Morning Chorus’ is a contender for song of the year. ALL the feels.
