The hugely influential third album from New Jersey’s Funk pioneers, was released 50 years ago this week.
This was the last album to feature the original line up of this incredible band and is arguably their best effort. The album opens with a spoken monologue from band leader George Clinton which leads into an epic 10 minute guitar solo from the brilliant Eddie Hazel. Apparently, Clinton asked Hazel to picture the day his Mother would die, though seemingly cruel, it certainly did the job.
The rest of the album is full of spaced out, monumental Funk jams, incorporating Blues, Folk, Rock and anything in between. The musicianship throughout is second to none, you just don’t get players like this any more, many have tried but no one has ever bettered this Psychedelic Funk masterpiece. Warning: A lot of class A’s were taken in the making of this album.
