ON THE TURNTABLE: Damon Locks Black Monument Ensemble - Now

Short, sharp and frank reviews from a confessed vinyl junkie. I’ll be posting my most loved records and most recent purchases right here for your perusal every week.

Now is the second album from the Chicago based multimedia Jazz experiment. Originally meant to be a solo project of sampled sound collages, Damon Locks Black Monument Ensemble grew into something much bigger. The album features an array of multi-talented musicians, singers and producers, creating an epic journey of Jazz infused Gospel hymns and Afrobeat jams with samples thrown in for good measure throughout.

It’s a tribute to Emmett Till, a young black boy who was murdered in 1955 for apparently “offending a white woman” in Mississippi and to the 1963 March in Washington. The message is also what’s happening ‘Now’ regarding the BLM movement and everything surrounding it, hence the title, a stunning album from start to finish from a truly inspirational project.
