ON THE TURNTABLE: Bob James – One

ON THE TURNTABLE: Bob James - One

Short, sharp and frank reviews from a confessed vinyl junkie. I’ll be posting my most loved records and most recent purchases right here for your perusal every week.

Gold vinyl reissue edition of the landmark third album from the heavily sampled Jazz pianist. An 81-year-old white dude from Missouri probably doesn’t sound very Hip Hop, but if it weren’t for Bob, many of the genre’s classics wouldn’t exist.

Originally released in ‘74, Bob’s third album features the all-time classic ‘Nautilus’, which has been sampled by just about everyone, including Run DMC, Slick Rick, Eric B & Rakim, Ghostface Killah, A Tribe Called Quest, the list is endless.

Those instantly recognisable keys and shuffled beats are certainly not the only track worth digging out here, though. Bob’s unique style is second to none; he’s part lounge lizard ( heard on the stunning version of ‘Feel Like Making Love’), part ‘Dirty Harry-esque soundtrack’. Accompanied by his superb backing band, this is Jazz Funk royalty, smoking jackets required.
