THE NEW SOUTHERN ELECTRIKK – BROWN EYES

THE NEW SOUTHERN ELECTRIKK DEBUT SINGLE 'BROWN EYES' - listen here

The New Southern Electrikk are a Manchester based band who have a smoldering under the surface post-punk feel about them but it’s hard to pin these guys down to any label and that’s no bad thing. This song was written by former Paris Angel Rickky Turner around 14 years ago, when during a bit of a low point in his life a girl left him. This cut him up a bit, he says, Brown Eyes was a woman who left me. As she walked away The Shirelles ‘Baby It’s You’ was playing and the song came to me there and then.”

The song at first has a bit of a 60s pop sound though it has a good thick bass line. The chorus is filled out with a bit of distortion and this mix of styles definitely gives the song a contemporary edge. This is further helped with a production style, that has been compared to the Legendary Martin Hannett.

Monica Ward’s vocals make the song believable. She makes you feel every word and its obvious she feels it too. Her voice has a unique sound which is very easy on the ears . The real plus for this track is that the more you hear it the better it gets. It’s a real grower, and although the style may not be to everyone’s taste, it definitely has aspects that should appeal to music fans from all backgrounds.

If you like this song you should check out their other tracks that are available. They have such a varied style that each one sounds completely different and that’s why I think these guys will be one of the more interesting and attractive bands to grace the soundwaves this year.
