LOWER DENS - Share the video for first single ‘To Die in L.A.’ - watch

Lower Dens have released the video for ‘To Die in L.A.’ from their forthcoming album, Escape from Evil, released on March 30th 2015 on Ribbon Music. The ‘To Die in L.A.’ video was directed by SSION’s Cody Critcheloe (Perfume Genius, Dum Dum Girls). It finds the self-obsessed female protagonist, the song’s “heartbreaker,” trying to navigate through clichéd LA culture in a series of hyper idealized sequences.

Director SSION had the following to say: “I really connected with the song when Jana sent it to me, I’d been spending a lot of time in LA. The song inspired me to write the treatment around my friend/muse/singer/actress/goddess Actually Huizenga. She’s this quintessential 80s LA summerbabe in the video, simultaneously delusional and intelligent, dressed up in all of my current obsessions/impressions of LA as an outsider…”

Set against the backdrop of Los Angeles, it also showcases Lower Dens’ Jana Hunter’s ability to take the experiences common to many of our lives – love, fear, guilt, among other subject matter explored in this set of songs – and turn it into music that’s transformative and potent. The song takes its name from the film, “To Live and Die in L.A.”, Jana divulges. Both the song and the film are about something wild, careless, exciting and tragic. The video needed to reflect that. Cody was the obvious choice. The first time I saw him in person, he was on top of a crowd in Monterrey, pelvic-thrusting and singing, as SSION. I fell in love immediately. Who better to translate this ode to reckless firebrands.’

Lower Dens will be playing a sold-out release show at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn, NY on March 31st.

Lower Dens’ 2010 debut, Twin-Hand Movement, was a stunning evolution of guitar brilliance and murky emotiveness, while its 2012 follow-up, Nootropics, was a stark, textured paean to experimental bands of the krautrock era. Escape From Evil is a bold, monumental step forward for the band, the sounds are clean and warm, songs are physical, and marks a welcome manifestation of a singer we’ve never quite seen until now.

Escape from Evil will be released on CD, LP, and digitally. In addition, a limited edition deep purple LP is available to pre-order exclusively through Ribbon Music. All pre-orders through Ribbon Music and iTunes will receive an instant download of ‘To Die in L.A.’

The album was produced by Hunter and co-produced and mixed by Chris Coady (Beach House, Cass McCombs). Other production elements came from Ariel Rechtshaid (Sky Ferreira, Vampire Weekend) and Lower Dens’ Walker Teret. Additional recording and production was done in Dallas, TX with John Congleton (St. Vincent, The Walkmen).
