London four-piece RIVER FURY release Five Year Plan EP

London Four-Piece RIVER FURY Release New Single COMFORT IS BEING FOOLED - Listen Now

After gaining mounting attention from multiple single releases throughout 2018, culminating in Wasteful premiering on Clash in September, River Fury has finally released their long-awaited debut Five Year Plan on Painted Halo Records. The EP was recorded at London’s Hermitage Studios and features production from Ed Ripley (Goat Girl).

Singer/guitarist Patric Nutton explains that the concept behind the title revolves around a person who can’t seem to get with the idea of settling down with a plan for his life, and instead rues it.” Commenting on the overall sound of the EP, Patric says “We wanted to make a fairly big sounding rock record, one that didn’t shy or mince its riffs or words. When we wanted to make it loud we made it loud and when we wanted it a bit more subtle and soothing we did that. Some of my other musical exploits are a bit more rough and ready and lo-fi but we didn’t feel the need for holding back from layering harmonies or conversely being discordant.

The EP showcases the band’s ability to inhabit seemingly different styles and mould them into a unique blend, ultimately unmasking them as music scholars channelling their musical influences into a cohesive sound. Singer/guitarist Dan Howe is understandably proud of the achievement: “We know what we like and it’s all about good songwriting first and foremost. Any good song should work in its raw form on just a crappy nylon string guitar and that’s how all these songs started out: thumbing chords in front of the TV to then take to rehearsal, and River Fury would electrify them and sort the arrangement”. Equally, Dan is candid about the group’s plans and aspirations: “Admittedly, we’re still finding our sound and I think this EP shows that. We’re also not really monogamous to any genre but this is really just the beginning, and the more we play together, the clearer our shared vision is becoming”.

River Fury are Dan Howe and Patric Nutton (both on vocals and guitar), joined by the formidable rhythm talents of Callum Hayes (Chaser/Sweetheart of the Rodeo) on bass and vocals, and Andrew Gallop (Fortnight in Florida/Orlando Seal and the Swell) on drums and percussion. Hailing from Melbourne and various part of the UK, River Fury formed from London’s open mic circuit. Sonically sitting somewhere between early 90’s grunge, 80’s indie and melodic post-rock, their breed of anthemic pop-rock features elements of math and psych and is played with both volume and vitality.
