Live Review: THE PIGEON DETECTIVES - The Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth 2

The Pigeon Detectives are BACK After performing Southsea Feast last year it was no surprise that they were back in Portsmouth this time at The Wedgewood Rooms, within 5 months of their last gig.

Lead singer Matt Bowman came bouncing onto the stage, the entire band exuded passion as they opened with a new song, Enemy Lines. Which even Matt admitted it was a brave of them as they never know how the audience would receive a new song that some fans may never had heard of – who most probably should’ve brought the new album Broken Glances. Straight after opening with a new song, the Pigeons quickly went back to a golden oldie This is an Emergency from 2008. Which got the crowd jumping around in the heat of the SOLD OUT sweaty Wedgewood Rooms. Along with the crowd, the band were in a celebratory mood as it was drummer’s Jimmi Naylor’s birthday too.

However, Matt, who likes to bounce and jump around the stage with much enthusiasm, got a little bit over excited during Emergency and missed the speaker, slipped and landed in the pit with the mic stand on top. Fortunately, just missing myself in the process. He was fine though and was quickly up and scrambling around for another mic to carry on singing with.

What made this gig what it is was the endless jumping, water throwing and crowd interaction. Pigeon Detectives are well worth seeing. Their UK leg of the tour has just ended but you can catch them throughout Europe in the next few weeks before they return to their home town of Leeds on Saturday 29th April. As they finished with I’m Not Sorry, they announced another show in Portsmouth for this autumn, where they will perform debut album Wait For Me in full from start to finish.
