Electro synth pop group Erasure featuring Vince Clarke and Andy Bell returned to Dublin’s Olympia Theatre for the first of three shows after being forced to reschedule Januarys sold-out shows in Dublin’s traditional venue due to singer Andy Bell’s throat infection.
Tonight the cancelled shows are a forgotten memory as Erasure arrives on stage at 9 pm to loud applause from the Irish crowd. Appearing from underneath the neon stage set up, Andy Bell dressed in a blazer (with what seems to have candle wax dripping from the shoulders a sequinned T-shirt with ‘Thrasher’ written on the front and tattooed leggings) sitting on a chair flanked by two backing singers with the always static Vince Clarke on a stage above.
Erasure has thirty-three years worth of hits to choose from, and they begin tonight’s show with O L’amour one of their earliest classics followed by Ship of Fools, Breath and Mad As We Are. Andy Bell’s voice sounds amazing and as with any Erasure show, it doesn’t take long for the crowd to be on their feet. Andy Bell has a short chat with the crowd after each song and introduces the album each track comes from. Erasure is currently promoting their 2017 album World Be Gone, and the latest orchestral version World Beyond and there is no shortage of songs from those albums the first being Just A Little Love.
But it’s the classic up-tempo tracks that fans want to hear the first being Victim of Love followed by Phantom Bride which really gets the crowd going. Andy removes his jacket to reveal an all over tattoed bodysuit and launches into a fantastic cover of Blondies Atomic from then on they are in the palm of Andy Bells glittery hand. A stream of pop hits follow including Drama, Stop! and their first hit single Sometimes.
For the encore, Vince Clarke armed with an acoustic guitar joins Andy on the mainstage for a fitting finale of arguably the pop duos most famous song A little Respect as the crowd joins in unison singing along to every word. As the Dublin fans leave the venue for the night the general vibe is tonight’s show was well worth the wait.
