Darkstar return in their original incarnation as a duo, but with a more ambitious and focused direction than ever – consolidating their experimental approach into lean, beat-driven pieces on this surprise mixtape.
Spurred on as ever by their birthplaces in the north of England, Kirklees Arcadia sees James Young and Aiden Whalley conjuring clouds of digitally twisted chorals, dubwise textures and melodically limber, drum-heavy compositions that refuse to sit still. Pulled into this orbit are enigmatic longtime ally Zomby, as well as Wild Beast’s frontman Hayden Thorpe on a shifting cover of ‘Temporary Secretary’.
Add to this a reworking of their classic ‘Aidy’s Girl Is A Computer’ and a tribute to the late, great Mark Bell of LFO and the ley lines of contemporary UK electronic music become readily apparent. Having seen many shifting tides in the UK’s underground, Darkstar have always remained a step ahead and now is no different.
Says Darkstar of their most recent work, “Kirklees Arcadia is a collection inspired by our frequent visits to West Yorkshire over the last 12 months in the process of realizing the third Darkstar record.”
