LAZY DAY share video for new single 'Real Feel' - Watch Now

Currently in the midst of a European tour and having recently shared stages with SASAMI and City Calm Down, London’s Lazy Day – the brainchild of songwriter Tilly Scantlebury – are back today with the first single since their acclaimed Letters EP arrived earlier this year on the band’s own Weird Cool Records.

‘Real Feel’ is all belly fire and clarity. If that sounds like a contradiction in terms, one listen to the incandescent indie rock conjured by Scantlebury here – alongside Liam Hoflay (guitar), Kris Lavin (bass) and Beni Evans (drums) – immediately proves otherwise: its driving verses are both propulsive and delicate; its dynamic choruses, anthemic yet questioning. The through line is the conflict between your past and present, between fear and hope; the striking confidence in the band’s songwriting mirroring the determination required to overcome doubt and despair.

Speaking to The Fader who launched the track last night, Scantlebury says, “‘Real Feel’ is about being pushed and pulled between the past and the present, and between being sad and feeling hopeful. I find it scary how much control your past has over you and your future, so a lot of these lyrics deal with this fear of being dragged backwards. Ultimately though, this song feels like a reminder to myself to not let things get in the way of being happy, and to keep moving forwards.”

Moving forwards is something that comes naturally to Lazy Day and ‘Real Feel’ is further evidence of it. The quartet – fresh from appearances this summer at Community, Latitude and Kendal Calling, as well as recent support slots with Bloc Party, Girlpool and No Vacation – have never sounded as fully-formed as they do here. Once again overseen by producer Steph Marziano, who also worked with the band on the Letters EP, ‘Real Feel’ bristles with confidence and a masterful grasp of Lazy Day’s sonic identity – the product of not just being recorded at the band’s own studio, but of the well-oiled live machine the quartet have become this summer.

“We recorded ‘Real Feel’ in our own studio, a space that really feels like home to us,” explains Scantlebury. “Having that familiarity helped me be much more emotionally open when it came to delivering the vocals. Working with Steph again also put me in the best headspace – the perfect combination of feeling really nurtured as well as having a big fire in my belly.

“This was the first time we’ve recorded in a live room, and all of us were crammed into the tiniest space. The air conditioning had broken, we were using tube amps, and it was the hottest day of the year. It was like a weird exercise class, or maybe even some intense kind of group therapy. Either way, we sweated out the toxins both literally and metaphorically.”

The accompanying video for ‘Real Feel’ was directed by Joe Snelling of Lucky Day Films and effortlessly captures the friendship and camaraderie at the heart of Lazy Day. Snelling offers, “I feel the energetic, friendship led chemistry and vibe of Lazy Day translates throughout this video. I can’t dance, but if I could I’d love to dance like Lazy Day.”

Scantlebury elaborates: “The ability to overcome something sad and turn it into something joyful isn’t only what ‘Real Feel’ is about, but is also how I see Lazy Day itself. I really wanted the video to show that transformation, starting from somewhere quite lonely and then building into something that gives a true sense of happiness. We had so much fun dancing together as a band and trying to keep a straight face. I hope people at the shows learn some of these dance moves and groove along with us.”

With the band’s upcoming UK dates – a headline run through October and November with Wych Elm and Junodream as supports – approaching quickly, that sense of fun, community and catharsis is sure to carry over. After all, the warmth and energy that Lazy Day share onstage is nothing short of infectious. “I hope that people feel a sense of belonging and family at our live show,” Scantlebury says; “everyone is invited to the party, nobody is left out.” It’s an inclusive message that feels perfectly in keeping with the warm ethos at the heart of everything Lazy Day do.
