INTERVIEW: Catrin Vincent of London four-piece, Another Sky

Another Sky

London four-piece Another Sky has captivated media and fans alike with their debut EP ‘Forget Yourself’ and recent singles ‘Avalanche and ‘Apple Tree’,’ featuring unbridled cinematic sonics, anchored by political poignancy and lead singer Catrin Vincent’s astonishing, otherworldly vocals. Known for their enthralling and mysterious live shows tickets flew for their current nationwide UK tour, 2019 is Another Sky’s for the taking.

Mark Millar caught up with lead vocalist and songwriter Catrin Vincent to find out more about one of the UK’s most exciting new bands.

ANOTHER SKY Announce Headline Belfast Show @ MCHUGHS BASEMENT BAR, Wednesday 6th Feb 2019

How did the band get together?

Jack decided he wanted to be in a band with Naomi and Max. He mentioned they needed a singer, so I said I was up for it. We all got in a room and wrote a song straight away. That’s when we knew it was something special.

Who are the band’s musical influences?

I’m not allowed to say ‘Max likes Four Tet’ anymore because I’ve said it so much it’s become a bit of an in-joke. We’ve also spoken a lot about our mutual love of Talk Talk’s latter two albums. I’ll mention some authors for lyrics, still technically part of the music; Margaret Atwood, Sally Rooney, Naomi Alderman and Olivia Laing.

In the past year Another Sky has released your debut EP ‘Forget Yourself’ and the singles ‘Apple Tree’ and ‘Chillers’. Do you have plans for an album this year?

We’re making an album but we don’t know when it’ll be released. We keep saying ‘soon’.

What was the band’s songwriting process?

We write our songs from jams. Though we lost a regular rehearsal space for a bit, so we had to write parts in our bedrooms. Now we’re on tour after writing at least once a week for five years which feels weird. It’s exciting seeing our writing process evolve when confronted with limitations.

How do you find being a new band in today’s music climate?

We keep hearing that it’s really hard for bands and rock is dead, but I don’t think anything has been ‘taken’ from bands by other forms of music getting their well deserved time in the spotlight. Bands will never die. There will always be something fascinating about the dynamic of a group of musicians.

What changes about how you work together as a band from tour to tour? Do you have set rituals or superstitions that are now integrated into your routines?

Luckily, we all really get along and the tour is a string of funny jokes. Sometimes we meditate before a gig. We’ll go and watch the support act to get pumped.

It’s wind down time after a show. What’s your go-to listen to unwind or recharge?

Silence! Sorry, boring answer, but very true.

What are you most grateful for about being able to be a musician every day?

At the moment it’s a very new word. We’ve only just quit our jobs so it’s a weird mix of guilt, freedom and validation. Suddenly a switch has been flicked and we’re allowed to call ourselves full-time musicians, despite being no more talented than others who are still struggling. It’s hard to feel grateful right now but we have to enjoy it while it lasts. I guess we’re grateful for being able to feel validated by our art, for now.

Do you have a record that you always return to?

Immunity – Jon Hopkins. That was a pretty revolutionary album.

What have you been listening to recently that you could recommend?

Adrianne Lenker’s new solo album – abysskiss. It’s incredible.

Another Sky is Singer and guitarist Catrin Vincent, bassist Naomi Le Dune, guitarist Jack Gilbert and Max Doohan on drums.
