Holy Holy Reveal Video for New Single DARWINISM and EUROPEAN dates

Track of the Day: Holy Holy - 'Darwinism' - Listen

HOLY HOLY are coming to Europe to celebrate the release of their brand new single Darwinism, the first single lifted from their highly anticipated sophomore record, set for release in 2017. Darwinism is an evocative tune that is as evolutionary for the band as the name suggests. HOLY HOLY will be hitting the road in Septemberr, kicking off in Amsterdam on September 21 travelling over to Germany for two shows at Reeperbahn Festival before heading to the UK to play packed-out shows in London and Leeds and then onto Paris, finishing up on Rotterdam on 2nd October.

Darwinism is a car crash of melody; a track of blistering energy. Timothy Carroll’s lyrics have a way of cutting through, and Darwinism is no different, bringing to life a couple’s relationship juxtaposed against the song’s driving riffs and melodic lines. Of the new track, Carroll says, “We built the song around that opening riff which I came up with while we were on tour last year. I remember the boys were all asleep in the apartment and I was looking for a place to play so I locked myself in the bathroom and was making some recordings on my phone. I felt straight away it could work as a full band track…” Weeks later, Carroll and Oscar Dawson guitarist, co-songwriter and co-founder with Carroll) explored the idea further in a tiny studio set-up in London in between shows on tour. “Oscar wrote a score and we had Ross Irwin and Kieran Conrau come in a lay down this big sweeping horn part.” Speaking of its effusive energy, Dawson enthuses “The horns are a fresh thing for us. We wanted the horns to be textural, using a band like The National or Radiohead as examples.” Pitch-shifting effects pedals, and other such tools, help provide new tones and straddle the balance between authentic and synthetic.

The film clip for the song is appropriately stark, consisting of entirely black and white visuals, and an unadulterated mix of retro film and stunning live footage of the band in their element. Directed by Plex Goldwin (Courtney Barnett, Prince Of Chinatown), “Darwinism was the process of finding the right tonality and energy – complimenting and contrasting itself to the band and the energy of the song, with a rough yet stripped back aesthetic,” Goldwin explains.

After a huge 2015 which featured the release of their debut album When The Storms Would Come, a remarkable collection of songs which received rave reviews globally and debuted at #11 on the ARIA Album charts and led to several sold out tours in Australia, sold out shows here in London as well as coveted spots on Liverpool Music Week, Primavera, London Calling and Dot To Dot Festivals, HOLY HOLY are completely in control of their sound, in the studio and on the stage. The band will be heading back out on tour in September and will have a few surprises up their sleeves for the punters. Dawson enthuses, “The sound has developed and expanded. We’re using different textures, stretching out the sound, playing louder, swapping instruments in some instances, and for some of the shows we may even bring some horns along. So the show has become more exciting and vibrant.”

Carroll & Dawson are joined in the studio and on the road with band mates Ryan Strathie, bassist Graham Ritchie, and their producer-turned-band-mate Matt Redlich on both production duties and on keys.

Holy Holy will be supported by Saint Agnes in London, and Edgar Duke in Leeds.
