FOALS and TEED collaborator, HUDSON SCOTT reveals hypnotic claymation visuals to debut track, 'Clay'.

Rising new London psych pop artist Hudson Scott has revealed the joyous, mesmeric visuals to his debut track, ‘Clay’. Hudson has also confirmed a first headline show, The Nines, Peckham, on 24th March.

Oxford raised, London based multi-instrumentalist Hudson Scott has been quietly honing his craft; performing with a handful of the UK’s biggest touring bands, whilst carefully perfecting his own solo work in the company of various esteemed producers, and last month proudly unveiled the first sunkissed fruits of his labour in ‘Clay’.

Returning this month with its stunning Steve Warne-orchestrated visual accompaniment, Hudson had this to say: “The concept for the video was to create something repetitive and hypnotic but at the same time human and dare I say groovy. The song has a bit of swagger and I wanted that portrayed too- I think Steve achieved this albeit Lemmings with swagger. The most base connection which I’m sure people will make is that the video uses claymation. I like this, it’s a wink and a grin.”

Growing up with an uncanny affinity towards Jazz, it wasn’t going to take much for Hudson Scott to throw himself into making music at the earliest possible opportunity. In fact, all it took was a trip to see a local brass band, where his mum borrowed a trumpet for the then 7-year old Hudson – who immediately refused to return it. The following years were spent devouring records by Miles Davis and Chet Baker, and learning a multitude of other instruments, which led him to moonlight in the backing bands of Oxford’s finest exports: Foals, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, and most recently Petite Noir.

A carpenter by trade, Hudson soaked up Bowie, Marvin Gaye and power ballads by listening to ‘80s station Magic FM whilst working on building sites and sprucing up friends’ studios to fund his own budding songwriting; influences which rubbed off on his own blend of effervescent, timeless soul and funk music.

Written in his bedroom, produced by friend and fellow musician Duncan Tootill, and mixed by Oli Bayston of Boxed In, Hudson’s debut track ‘Clay’ is a sparkling ode to being, “malleable to another’s whim, regardless of how stubborn you think you are.” Built around Hudson’s shimmering hook (“What can I say, girl? You shape me like clay, I tumble right to you,”), yearning effects-laden guitar and elastic, snaking bass groove, ‘Clay is a perfumed love song at its core: the uninhibited, carefree, fluid antithesis of his rigid – though, no less aesthetically rewarding – day job. A rallying cry against forever being the sideman; Hudson Scott is a culmination of years of graft and a beautifully defined statement of character. The stage is set for everything to fall seamlessly into place in 2016.
