Feature: MUSICIANS AGAINST HOMELESSNESS CAMPAIGN

The nationwide campaign Musicians Against Homelessness is the brain child of Cambridgeshire based PR woman Emma Rule and is being backed by former Creation records boss Alan McGee. The aim of which is to raise funds and awareness of the great work that the homeless charity Crisis UK do and to support up-and-coming bands in various areas. Crisis work tirelessly to support homeless people into getting back on their feet and start enjoying life again.

Many famous names are supporting the project including Shaun Ryder (being interviewed on xsnoize’s latest podcast), Black Grape, The Libertines, Courtney Love and Irvine Welsh to name but a few. Alan McGee, founder of Creation Records and who managed Jesus and Mary Chain and discovered Oasis sees giving young bands a chance to perform just as important as the cause. “Hopefully this project will give a lot of new bands a chance to play and to exist in a place where they all can shine on.” Gigs are taking place independently all over the UK between 18th September and 2nd October (the first one being in Leeds) including cities such as Aberdeen, Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle to name a few and it is hoped it will become an annual event.

Homelessness affects a lot of people in inner cities and Manchester is no exception. There will around 16 gigs around the city. On the 20th September Band on the Wall hosted an evening headed by Rowetta, singer with Happy Mondays and Peter Hook, featuring Seth Leppard of Black Grape amongst others. Clint Boon will provide a DJ set as part of one of two event at the Live Room in Manchester on 24 September and then on the 8 October event artists include former Ocean Colour Scene member Andy Bennett, Maker and Dirty Saint. Local girl Angela Moore will be organising a gig at The Cinnamon Club in Altrincham, Cheshire on 30 September to include Liam McClair (who recently supported Echo and the Bunnymen), Ryan Jarvis (who supported the Courteeners last year at Manchester Apollo) and The Replicants.

Says Angela: “I am interested to get involved in the campaign as it is a cause close to my heart. I have never organised a gig before, I am not a gig or venue promoter just a regular music fan who has a desire to help in whatever small way I can. No doubt I will make mistakes along the way but I will hopefully learn as I go! If this first gig goes well I hope to organise others.
