Following the release and acclaim of recent single ANARCHY AND ALCHEMY, Echobelly have announced the release of their sixth album, their first in 11 years.

Reinvigorated after a long hiatus, Echobelly founders SONYA AURORA MADAN and GLENN JOHANSSON found themselves drawn to writing songs for what would become ANARCHY AND ALCHEMY. Recorded at The Church in north London, with producer Ian Grimble, the title is in part based on the universal side of human nature and the anarchic, alchemical as well as courageous and destructive side of our character. It also tackles the uncertainty we now face more than ever in all aspects of our contemporary lives.

ANARCHY AND ALCHEMY has that unmistakable Echobelly sound, yet the subtle breadth of genres and styles, including heavy rock, jazz, country, American folk music, not to mention scales thought to have been used in ancient music, makes it an artistically ambitious statement and a hugely rewarding listen.

Feeling is the secret code that permeates the lyrical style on the album – dark undercurrents and expansive openness sit side by side. Madan approached her lyric writing by moving away from direct statements, inviting the listener to interpret and run their own mini-film of what the songs stir up in them. From the fascinating inspiration behind the album’s title track – a sophisticated and brooding jazz-tinged song, exploring many themes, including what the ancient Sanksrit scriptures call ‘Kali Yuga’ – ANARCHY AND ALCHEMY takes the listener on a journey through many esoteric and fascinating subjects.
