The Coral have been on hiatus a while now since their last album from 2010 The Butterfly House. This ‘new’ album is a collection of lost songs from the period between The Invisible Invasion and Roots and Echoes albums.
For lost songs, read studio noodlings, B-side sounding material and instrumentals, it sort of works but ends up sounding like a cut price Coral album treading familiar ground. They’ve always been a 60’s psychedelia, Doors, Beatles, shanties, film soundtrack type of band and this album shows that.
Not that it’s all bad the The Watcher in the Distance is a stand out that could easily fit on a Doors album, Gently echoes the Wirral band’s proximity to Liverpool with it’s Lennon acoustic sound. A couple of instrumentals are used as filler Nine Times The Colour Red could easily be used on Countryfile.
So to sum up it’s an OK album for the aficionado or completist Coral fan, but could be hard work for the average Joe.
