BLUES GUITARIST BB KING HAS PASSED AWAY AGED 89

Tributes have poured in for the blues legend BB King, the inspiration for generations of musicians, who has died in his sleep aged 89. The world famous singer and guitarist, who began life on a plantation in Mississippi and was universally acclaimed as one of the best blues musicians of all time, had been receiving hospice care at his home.

Best known for his hits ‘Lucille’, ‘Sweet Black Angel’ and ‘Rock Me Baby’, had worked with Eric Clapton and U2. He was awarded 15 Grammies during his lifetime. King was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

BB King suffered ill health in recent times and was receiving “home hospice care” following his recent hospitalisation. The guitarist and singer was rushed to a hospital in Las Vegas in April, with the reason cited as “the result of dehydration from his Type II diabetes”.

His death was announced on Facebook by his daughter, Claudette, who posted: “It is with great sadness that we relay that Blues legend BB King has died in Las Vegas at the age of 89.” She added: “Please remember him in your heart.”

Last year, King was forced to cancel a number of performances after suffering a fall onstage at a show. King pulled out of eight gigs in total during October 2014, including two dates at his own BB King Blues Club in Times Square, New York. The causes were cited at the time as “dehydration” and “exhaustion”.
