Following on from the enormous praise they received for their fourth studio album ‘Blue Hours’, which was released earlier this year and reached #1 in the UK indie charts and #6 in the UK album charts, Bear’s Den – made up of Andrew Davie and Kevin Jones – today announce the details behind their soundtrack for season three of the hit Apple TV series Trying, showcased by the new Maisie Peters collaboration ‘A Good Love Pt.2’.

Unlike Bear’s Den’s usual oeuvre, the soundtrack was written to spec with Andrew Davie writing new original songs to tie in with the storyline of each episode’s theme and narrative, working closely with the creator Andy Walton and directors Jim O’Hanlon (“Catastrophe,” “Marvel’s The Punisher”) and Elliot Hegarty (“Ted Lasso”). Alongside the collaboration with Maisie Peters – who created the soundtrack for ‘Trying’ series two – the soundtrack, which will be available from series launch on July 22nd, will feature not one but two guest appearances from Jade Bird, a collaboration with Monica Martin and sees the band team up once again with Sally Herbert (string arrangements) and Ian Grimble (on production) to create a stunning soundtrack to the incredibly touching British series.

Speaking about the soundtrack and working with Maisie Peters, Bear’s Den said, “This whole opportunity only really came about because of Maisie so we’re eternally grateful to her for that! We were asked to collaborate on her brilliant song: ‘I want you to change (because you want to change)’ for the 2nd series of Trying which was so fun to be involved in. Without that moment, writing these songs would never have happened. It made total sense to us, because of that, for Maisie to be the first person we asked to collaborate with on the song: ‘A Good Love pt 2’. Maisie is such a brilliant artist, songwriter and singer and to collaborate with her in the studio was so much fun. She made a bunch of lyrical changes that were just amazing and her voice and style is so cool and unique. It was just super inspiring to work with her. A huge honour and such a cool and funny person to boot!”

Maisie added, “I had the most special magical experience making the soundtrack for season 2, so when the guys asked if I would be interested in having a small part to play in season 3 of course I said yes. I have been fans of theirs for years and as soon as I heard this song I knew I wanted to be part of it. Working with them is a dream and I think this song is a perfect blend of our universes, and the perfect way to tie up the musical world of Trying.”

The third season of the heartwarming comedy series Trying is set to premiere globally on Friday, July 22, 2022 on Apple TV+. The eight-episode third season of Trying will make its debut with the first two episodes, followed by new episodes weekly, every Friday through September 2, 2022. After a dramatic end to season two, the third season picks up with Nikki (BAFTA nominee Esther Smith) and Jason (SAG Award-nominee Rafe Spall) waking up as new parents to two children they are still getting to know. Now they just have to keep hold of them, which proves to be trickier than they initially thought. Thrown straight into the parental deep-end, Nikki and Jason’s relationships with each other and with their nearest and dearest are tested as they desperately try to navigate the ups and downs of parenting – while hanging onto their kids, and their sanity.

Trying is created, written and executive produced by Andy Wolton, directed and executive produced by Jim O’Hanlon (“Catastrophe,” “Marvel’s The Punisher”) and executive produced by Josh Cole. The series is produced by BBC Studios. The complete first and second seasons of Trying are now streaming on Apple TV+.

‘Trying’ season 1’s soundtrack was created by Elbow’s Guy Garvey and featured to name a few; Kelly Jones, Isaac Gracie and Maisie Peters, the latter who appeared as herself, busking in one of the episodes of the original series.

Off the back of her feature on season one, Maisie was invited to create the soundtrack for the second series, for which she enlisted James Bay, Griff and Bear’s Den to collaborate. Having been a fan of Bear’s Den since her youth and attending many of their live shows, Maisie got in touch with Bear’s Den to feature on a track with her for the soundtrack.

For season three the team behind the show invited Bear’s Den to create the soundtrack for the new series, a first for the band. It seemed very fitting to have Maisie feature on this series, having been instrumental in them coming to be in this position.

Speaking about their work on the soundtrack Bear’s Den gave this insight, “It was a real honour for us to work on the songs for series three of Trying. We’ve both become dads during the last couple of years and are big fans of the show so it felt extremely serendipitous for us to be asked to write the music for a show all about becoming parents. It really is such a heartwarming and awesome show and we feel so honoured to be involved.

“The main challenge for us was that Bear’s Den’s music is often quite sad and Trying is such an uplifting and funny show so it was definitely a real challenge trying to write songs that felt right within that world and had a certain lightness to them. The directors Elliot and Jim were both so helpful at steering the songs in the right direction.

On the process of writing the songs, Andrew Davie said, “I think the script writing for the show is so smart and funny and so many of the lyrical ideas for the songs are really just borrowed from powerful moments from the script. I genuinely think Andy Wolton is terrific and made the songwriting job much easier. I was just constantly laughing and underlining his work! The songs were all written just to the scripts which we were sent while we were in the studio working on a different album (Blue Hours).

“This project was a totally new experience for us as a band and certainly for me as a songwriter but I really enjoyed it and got to work with so many incredible people along the way that made it all a lot easier.

“Getting to collaborate with so many brilliant artists was such a huge honour too, Maisie, Monica and Jade are all unbelievable artists, singers and songwriters and getting to work with each of them has been a dream come true for us as a band.”
