AMY MACDONALD shares video for new single ‘The Hudson’ - Watch Now

Amy Macdonald builds towards the October 30th release of her eagerly anticipated new album ‘The Human Demands’ by sharing the official video for lead single ‘The Hudson’. ‘The Hudson’ received a world exclusive play on Radio 2 courtesy of Ken Bruce and was quickly followed with the announcement of a major European tour next spring, which represents her biggest in a decade.

The track uses a personal story as the basis for a song that articulates a hugely relatable experience. It’s inspired by Amy’s parents’ tales of visiting New York City in the ‘70s, and poses a question that everyone must ask themselves: did I make the right choices earlier in my life?

It’s a story that’s reflected in the poignant accompanying video. It focuses upon a couple exploring NYC’s Lower East Side in the late ‘70s. Although the relationship didn’t work out, there’s sadness for a time that can never be returned to, but also a fondness for the memories it brings flooding back. The video was directed by Tony Burke and Henry Littlechild.

Amy explains, “The Hudson is such a special song because of the back story, and I felt like it needed a striking video to really highlight the story. It feels cinematic and highlights the feelings of lost love and hindsight, looking back and wondering if life could have panned out differently – it’s something we all do and yet we’ll never know the answer.

Making this video in the midst of a pandemic was absolutely crazy. Having a team across the Atlantic working away in New York City whilst we sat at home was strange. I didn’t know how we’d make it work or how my images would tie in with the images from NYC but I’m so pleased with the final outcome. I’ve always wanted to make a video that feels like a movie and I think I’m finally there. Enjoy!”

Set to be released via a new deal with Infectious Music (alt-J, Garbage) / BMG, ‘The Human Demands’ rediscovers, from a grown-up perspective, that magic youthful moment of excitement and discovery we can all relate to. It finds Amy reconnecting with her indie roots, albeit with a Bruce Springsteen-like widescreen grandeur and an ambition that suits her powerful, resonant vocal. Its themes include getting older, dealing with depression, and falling in love with someone you want to spend the rest of your life with. The album was produced by Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Tom Odell).

‘The Human Demands’ adds to a new chapter in a career that has seen her accumulate over 200 million Spotify streams, land four Top 5 albums (including her #1 debut) and sell six million albums.
